Ian Thorpe

Our most successful Olympic medallist, three times gold and two times silver medallist Ian Thorpe was also the youngest make ever to represent Australia when he appeared at the 1998 World Championships at the age of 14. The ‘Thorpedo’ continued to dominate freestyle events at every Olympic, World, Commonwealth and Pan Pacific Swimming Championships until his break after the 2004 Olympics in Athens. His athletic achievements made him one of Australia’s most popular athletes, and he was recognised as the Young Australian of the Year in 2000. Since his retirement from elite swimming, he has served as an advocate and ambassador for a number of causes including marriage equality.
